Financial Aid

Mather Hospital will provide financial aid to those who qualify. In addition, Mather can counsel you on government assistance programs.

Frequently Asked Financial Aid Program Questions

What if I do not have health insurance and cannot afford to pay my hospital bill?
John T. Mather Memorial Hospital provides reduced fees for uninsured or underinsured patient earning up to 300% of the federal poverty level. Inpatient and outpatient medically necessary services are included.

Will Financial Aid cover my entire hospital bill?
If you qualify for Financial Aid the discounts can be applied toward an open balance as well as co-payment, deductible or co-insurance. Personal items such as: private room differential or non-medically necessary services can not be considered under Financial Aid.

How will I know which services are covered?

What do I have to do to be considered for a reduced fee?
Patients applying for Financial Aid are expected to fully cooperate in qualifying for government programs (i.e. Medicaid) and may be expected to provide our facility with additional documentation to further support their income and asset levels.

What is the Financial Aid sliding fee scale based on?
The Financial Aid program is based on federal poverty levels for family size and income.

How long does the application process take?
Upon receipt of your first statement from the John T. Mather Memorial Hospital Patient Accounting Department, you will be provided with the information necessary to contact the Financial Aid representative. If you wish to do so earlier please feel free to contact the Financial Aid representative at 631-476-2801 option 8. Once the Financial Aid representative receives a completed application, the Director of Patient Accounts has 30 days to contact the applicant via mail with the final decision.

What happens if my application is declined?
In the event a Financial Aid applicant is denied free care or does not agree with the determination, they may appeal the decision by contacting the Financial Aid representative at 631-476-2801 option 8 for a Financial Aid Appeal Form. Otherwise all denied applicants are afforded the opportunity to develop a realistic and fair payment plan, while recognizing the financial obiligation for the services provided.

Free / Low Cost Health Insurance for Children, Families and Adults up to Age 64

Staff from Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council will be at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital to assist you and your children in applying for the Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs:

Services include: medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
